Why good-looking designs burn badly
A screen shows you fewer pixels than your file contains; a laser resolves more. That gap is why a design can look perfect on your monitor and come out soft, muddy, or blurred on wood. This tool measures the things the screen hides: real DPI at the size you will burn, how much of the power band your tones use, and how much detail is finer than the beam itself.

What does the score actually measure?
Five things that decide how a burn turns out: the true resolution at the size you will engrave, how much of the laser's power band your tones use, whether the art matches its own medium (smooth greys for a photo, two clean values for bold ink), edge sharpness, and how much fine detail survives the laser's dot at that size. Each factor shows its measured reading, not just a number.
Why does the engrave width change my score?
Because DPI is not a setting inside a file, it is pixels divided by physical size. The same 1000-pixel image is roughly 250 DPI at 100mm wide and about 85 DPI at 300mm. The second one will burn soft no matter what your laser software does, so the width you pick is the single biggest factor in the score.
Does upscaling really improve the design?
Partly, and the report is honest about it. Resampling gives the laser properly sampled pixels instead of blocky ones and lets the sharpening work at output size, so the burn genuinely looks better. It cannot invent detail the photo never captured, which is why the Detail survival factor stays honest even after upscaling.
Is my design uploaded anywhere?
No. The rating and every improvement process run inside your browser on your own device. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or queued on a server, which is why this is free and unlimited.
What is the midtone lift for?
Lasers burn midtones darker than a screen displays them, so an unprepared photo comes out muddy in the middle greys. The lift raises the middle of the tone curve to compensate, which is the difference between a face that reads clearly and one that turns into a dark smudge.
