Making text that cuts and engraves cleanly
Words are one of the most common laser jobs and one of the easiest to get wrong. Letter counters fall out, thin fonts snap, and curved text distorts. Here is how to turn type into laser-ready vectors that hold together.
Convert text to outlines, always
A font is an instruction to draw letters, not the letters themselves. If you send live text to a laser and the machine does not have that exact font installed, it substitutes a different one and your design changes. Converting text to outlines turns each letter into a fixed vector shape, so it looks identical everywhere and the laser cuts exactly what you see. Any reliable text-to-SVG tool does this conversion as it exports.
Counters, and why stencil fonts exist
The enclosed spaces inside letters, the middle of an O, the loops of a B, the triangle in an A, are called counters. When you cut a word all the way through, every counter is a piece that falls out. You have two options. Add small bridges that tie each counter to the surrounding letter, the classic stencil look, or choose a stencil-safe font whose letters are drawn with the counters already connected. For engraving this never comes up, because engraving removes no material, so any font is fine.
Weight, spacing, and curves
Thin and script fonts look elegant on screen and cut badly, because hairline strokes are too fragile to survive as material and connecting points between letters are weak. For cutting, a medium-to-bold weight holds up far better. Spacing matters too: letters set too tightly can merge into an unreadable blob when kerf eats the gap between them, while letters set too loosely lose the connection a bridged word needs. When you bend text along an arc, keep the curve gentle, because a tight radius distorts the letterforms and pinches the insides of the curve.

Frequently asked questions
What do I get when I export?
Real vector outlines, not a font reference. The SVG is sized in millimetres so it imports at true physical size, the DXF opens in any laser or CNC software, and the PNG is a high-resolution raster. Because the letters are converted to paths, they look identical on every machine, no font installation needed.
What are stencil bridges and when do I need them?
When you CUT text out of a sheet, enclosed letter centers (the middle of O, A, D, or the counters in Arabic letters) fall out because nothing holds them. Turn on Stencil tabs and the tool carves small tabs at the top and bottom of each enclosed counter, sized to your lettering, so the design cuts as one piece. Engraving does not need bridges, and the included stencil fonts are bridge-safe by design.
Can the letters cut as one connected piece, like a name sign?
Yes. Select a text line and choose Connect letters in the Bridging control. Every letter is welded to its neighbour with two small rounded tabs, placed where the letters sit closest at two different heights, so each joint is rigid and the whole word lifts off the laser bed as one piece. Dots on i and j are welded to their stems automatically. This is the mode for name signs, cake toppers, and wall words.
Does Arabic text work properly?
Yes. Arabic letters join and flow right-to-left correctly, including on curved text, because the shaping is done by your browser's own text engine before the letters are converted to vector outlines. Cairo, Amiri, Reem Kufi, Tajawal, and Aref Ruqaa are included.
How does curved text work?
Select a line and drag the curve slider: positive values arch the text upward, negative values bow it downward, up to a half circle either way. The letters are placed and rotated along the arc individually, so the spacing stays even.
Can I combine several lines, fonts, and colors?
Yes. Add as many text lines and shapes (rectangle, circle, triangle, star, heart, ring) as you want, each with its own font, size, color, curve, spacing, and bridges. Double-click text to edit it right on the canvas, drag to move, use the corner handle to resize, and undo any step with Ctrl+Z. Everything exports as one file.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Fonts load into your browser and every step, layout, curving, bridging, vector conversion, runs on your device. Nothing you type leaves your computer.
What software opens the files?
The SVG opens in LightBurn, xTool Creative Space, Glowforge, Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, Inkscape, and Illustrator. The DXF covers laser and CNC suites like RDWorks and Fusion 360. Sizes come in at true millimetres.
