Raster to vector: what a laser actually needs

Lasers and CNC machines cut along paths, not pixels. Understanding the difference between the two file types is the key to getting a clean cut instead of a jagged one, and it explains why a conversion step exists at all.

Why a photo will not cut

A photo, a PNG, or a JPG is a raster image, a grid of colored pixels. A laser has no idea what to do with a grid. It needs a vector, a set of mathematical paths that describe where the head should travel. Converting a raster to a vector traces the shapes in your image and turns them into those paths, so the machine can follow a smooth line around your design instead of trying to interpret a field of dots. This is why you cannot simply drop a phone photo into laser software and cut it.

SVG and DXF, and when to use each

SVG is the friendlier of the two. It carries curves as true bezier paths, opens in almost every laser and design program, and keeps fills and strokes, so it is the default for most cutting and for anything with smooth curves. DXF is the CAD-native format. It is what many older or industrial controllers prefer, it maps cleanly to layers, and when it is exported in real millimetres it imports at the correct physical size without guesswork.

A good converter gives you both, so you can hand the SVG to a Glowforge or xTool and the DXF to a fiber laser or a CNC router without redoing the work.

What makes a trace clean

The quality of a trace depends almost entirely on the input. A high-contrast image with clear shapes and a plain background traces into crisp, simple paths. A noisy image with soft edges and gradients traces into hundreds of tiny wobbly segments that cut slowly and look rough. If your result is messy, the fix is usually upstream: increase the contrast, remove the background, and simplify the busy areas before converting, rather than trying to clean up thousands of nodes afterward.

  • Reach for SVG for most lasers and curvy designs, DXF for CNC and CAD-style workflows.

What is auto-bridging?

Stencils have floating pieces, the hole in an "O", the dot on an "i", the inside of an "8". Without bridges those fall out when you cut the stencil. Auto-bridging connects each floating piece to the main body with thin connectors so the design comes out in one piece.

Does it work with handheld lasers (xTool M1, Glowforge Aura)?

Yes. Any laser or CNC that accepts SVG or DXF works. The output is scaled to millimetres so it imports at the correct physical size.
